How can I prevent no-shows to my volunteer opportunities?

At Golden, we want to do everything we can to eliminate the very annoying situation where a volunteer pulls a no-show. We've designed the system specifically to help you improve volunteer engagement significantly, and, even though some amount of no-shows is inevitable, there are additional steps you can take.

Golden is designed to limit no-shows

Golden gets far fewer no-shows than other platforms because we treat sign-ups as live sign-ups and hold both organizers and volunteers accountable for attendance.

What does Golden do to prevent no-shows?

  • We email registered volunteers the day before the opportunity begins, reminding them that you are expecting them.
  • For flexible opportunities, you can set up automated reminders to notify volunteers who haven't entered their hours within the window you configure in the Edit screen of the opportunity.

What can I do to prevent no-shows?

  • Ensure that your opportunities, whether they're local or virtual, have clear next steps. Our research shows that opportunities with no clear next steps have significant drop-offs in follow-through.
  • Make the volunteer opportunity descriptions clear and concise. Have a specific task detailed for each opportunity, rather than telling potential volunteers that you'll choose tasks for them after they arrive.
  • The biggest factor in causing no-shows is directing volunteers to external websites to "complete their sign-up." Opportunities with these types of instructions have significantly more no-shows than the average opportunity on Golden.
