What are the different opportunity types?

On Golden, you have the option to create a variety of opportunities to match your volunteer engagement needs: Local, Flexible, Webinars, Videos, Micro Actions, and more!

Local Opportunities: These are the most common volunteer opportunities with:

  • Set start and end times (like 10am - noon)
  • A physical location (like your HQ, a local park, or school)

Local Opportunities have the highest sign-up rates (2x the conversion rates of Amazon!) AND retention rates (volunteers come back 3x more than other platforms).

Why do they perform so well?

  • Volunteers know exactly what is expected of them, making it easier to decide whether or not to sign up.
  • Volunteers know what to expect from the activity that day. When experience meets expectations, volunteers are much more likely to have a positive experience.

Flexible Opportunities: As the name implies, these are a bit more flexible. Sign-up rates can be a little lower, but sometimes it's necessary to accommodate the activity.

Flexible Opportunities can have:

  • A digital location (like a web conference URL or phone number), a physical location, or no location at all!
  • Start and end times, or no times at all (complete "on your own time").
    • For opportunities with no start/end times, you can set an automatic reminder for volunteers to log their hours for you!

Some examples of great Flexible Opportunities include:

  • Remote group activities - great for companies or groups of friends to get together to make cards, assemble donation kits, or host a toy drive
  • Complete specific projects - like designing a new logo for your organization
  • Reporting hours for work volunteers do on their own (like mentors who are responsible for scheduling directly with their mentees)
  • Listing drop-off locations for donations of physical goods

Webinar Opportunities: These opportunities are specifically for activities that can be attended digitally. They have a specific set time and no physical location. You can use a digital location like a website or online meeting link, or you can use a phone number as the location as well!

Some examples of webinar opportunities are:

  • Scheduled web tutoring over video chat
  • Orientations
  • Trainings

Video Opportunities: Video opportunities allow you to create on-demand learning experiences for your volunteers. These are perfect for:

  • Training modules volunteers can complete at their convenience
  • Orientation videos to welcome new participants
  • Educational content about your organization's mission

Micro Actions (Petitions): These opportunities enable quick, meaningful participation and are great for:

  • Committing to take a small step toward a big mission
  • Signing a petition
  • Indicating interest in something happening in the future
  • Collecting standard information from participants

A word of warning: We urge you not to list opportunities that don't have specific next steps. For instance, if you're interested in recruiting an intern or a long-term volunteer, give people the option to sign up for an interview at a set time or point them to a training video. Our data shows that without specific next steps (like "sign up and we'll contact you!"), volunteers are 7.6x more likely NOT to follow through.
